Bereavement counsellor in Huddersfield and Online across the UK

Welcome

I'm Joanne Reed, a BACP Accredited Grief and Loss Counsellor based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, offering online and telephone counselling to adults across the UK.

I know how daunting it can feel to contact a counsellor. You might be wondering where to start, whether you'll become overwhelmed, or whether you'll be able to put into words everything you've been carrying. You may even be questioning whether what you're feeling is normal. Those thoughts are completely understandable, and you don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

My own experience of counselling showed me the difference it can make to have someone alongside you who listens carefully, helps you make sense of what you're experiencing and doesn't expect you to cope alone. It's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about the work I do today.

I believe every person's experience is unique, which is why I take the time to really understand you, your story and what has brought you to counselling. Whether you're living with grief, anxiety or depression, we'll work together at a pace that feels right for you, making sense of your thoughts and emotions and helping you find a way of moving forward that feels both manageable and meaningful.

A Qualified, Ethical and Confidential Counsellor you can trust

As a BACP Accredited Counsellor, I work to the highest professional and ethical standards, giving you the reassurance that you'll receive counselling from someone who is experienced, accountable and committed to providing high quality care. Confidentiality is at the heart of my practice, so you can speak openly, knowing that what you share will be treated with respect and care.

People often tell me they feel able to be themselves in our sessions. You don't have to worry about saying the wrong thing, being too emotional or not emotional enough. We'll work together at a pace that feels right for you, taking time to understand your experiences, make sense of what you're going through and explore whatever feels most important, always with your agreement and never with any pressure to talk before you're ready.

A Counsellor Who Takes the Time to Understand You

Many people tell me they were worried about starting counselling because they didn't know where to begin or whether they'd be able to talk about what had happened. You don't need to have the right words or know exactly what you want to say. We'll find a place to start together.

I believe counselling should never feel rushed. Some sessions may be about making sense of your thoughts, while others may simply be about having the space to say the things you've been keeping to yourself.

We'll work at a pace that feels right for you, giving you the time to understand your experience and make sense of what you're going through.

Whether you're living with grief, anxiety or depression, my role is to walk alongside you with compassion, curiosity and care, helping you move towards a place where life feels less overwhelming and more manageable.

How I work

Starting counselling can feel like a big step, especially if you've never spoken to anyone about what you're carrying. You might be wondering what to expect, whether you'll know what to say or if counselling is really right for you.

I see counselling as something we do together. I won't simply sit in silence and expect you to carry the conversation on your own. I'll ask questions, help you explore what's happening and gently encourage you to look at your experiences from different perspectives.

You are the expert in your own life. My role is to help you make sense of your thoughts, emotions and patterns, so that what feels confusing or overwhelming begins to feel more understandable.

My approach is rooted in person centred counselling, while drawing on other therapeutic approaches where they're helpful to your individual needs. Every person is different, so we'll work in a way that feels right for you, helping you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and the confidence to move forward in a way that feels meaningful and manageable.

I work with adults aged 18 and over, offering secure online video and telephone counselling across the UK.

FAQ's

How I work with Grief

Grief can feel confusing and unpredictable. One moment you may be overwhelmed by emotion and the next you may feel completely numb. You might find yourself replaying conversations, questioning decisions, feeling guilty for laughing or wondering why everyone else seems to have carried on while your world still feels as though it has stopped.

Many people try to protect those around them by keeping their grief to themselves. They don't want to worry their family, upset their children or feel like they're bringing everyone else down. Carrying those thoughts alone can become exhausting.

In our sessions, you don't have to hide any part of your grief. Whether you're struggling with sadness, anger, guilt, relief or questions that have no easy answers, we'll take the time to make sense of what you're experiencing. Together, we'll explore the impact your loss has had, find ways of staying connected to the person who has died and help you build a life that can hold both your grief and the future that's still ahead of you.

How I work with Anxiety

Anxiety can leave you feeling as though your mind never switches off. You might find yourself constantly overthinking, expecting the worst, avoiding situations or feeling permanently on edge. Sometimes you know exactly what's triggered it. Other times it can seem to appear out of nowhere, leaving you wondering why you feel this way.

Together, we'll take the time to understand what's happening beneath the anxiety, rather than simply trying to manage the symptoms. We'll explore the thoughts, emotions and experiences that may be keeping it going, helping you make sense of the patterns that have developed and why they can feel so difficult to break.

Alongside developing that understanding, I'll share practical strategies where they're helpful and gently encourage you to look at things from a different perspective when the time feels right. We'll always work collaboratively, at a pace that feels comfortable for you, so that anxiety begins to feel less overwhelming and no longer has quite the same hold over your life.

How I work with Depression

Depression can change the way you see yourself, other people and the world around you. It can leave you feeling exhausted, disconnected or as though you're simply existing rather than living. Even the smallest tasks can feel overwhelming, and you may find yourself wondering whether you'll ever feel like yourself again.

Together, we'll take the time to understand what's happening beneath those feelings, rather than judging them or trying to push them away. We'll explore your thoughts, emotions and experiences, making sense of how they affect one another and why life feels so difficult right now.

Our work won't be about forcing you to feel positive or pretending everything is okay. It will be about helping you understand your experience, finding a way through the heaviness at a pace that feels right for you, and gradually helping life feel more manageable again.

Depression Counselling

Counselling tailored to you

No two people experience grief, anxiety or depression in the same way, so I don't believe counselling should follow a one size fits all approach. I offer open ended counselling, giving you the time and space to work through what's important to you without the pressure of a fixed number of sessions. We'll regularly review how you're finding our work together so that you always feel involved, informed and in control of the process.

Sessions are 50 minutes and cost £60, payable in advance. I offer secure online video and telephone counselling, so you can choose the option that feels most comfortable for you.

  • Bereavement and grief

  • Suicide bereavement

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Depression and low mood

  • Social isolation and loneliness

  • Health anxiety

  • Stress and burnout

  • Relationship or family breakdown

  • Redundancy and work-related stress

  • Self-harm and suicidal thoughts

  • Low self-esteem and confidence issues

If what you're struggling with isn't listed above, you're still very welcome to get in touch. Counselling isn't about fitting into a category. It's about understanding your individual experience and finding the support that's right for you.

Free To Be Me Counselling

Although you may come to counselling because of one particular difficulty, it's often through talking that other experiences begin to make sense. Grief, anxiety, depression and life events are rarely separate from one another, which is why we'll always look at the whole of your experience, not just the problem that brought you here.

I offer online and telephone counselling to adults across the UK, providing support for bereavement, suicide loss, anxiety, depression and other life challenges with a thoughtful, individual approach tailored to you.

 Professional Qualifications:

I'm a BACP Accredited Counsellor, qualified in Person Centred Counselling and experienced in supporting adults through grief, suicide bereavement, anxiety and depression. While my work is grounded in person centred counselling, I draw on other therapeutic approaches where they're helpful, tailoring our sessions to your individual needs rather than following a one size fits all approach.

Being open and honest is important to me. If I ever feel that I'm not the right person to support you or that another service would better meet your needs, I'll tell you. I believe you deserve the right support, even if that means it isn't with me.

What next?

If you've recognised yourself while reading this, you don't have to have everything figured out before reaching out.

I offer a free 15 minute consultation, giving you the opportunity to ask any questions, find out how I work and decide whether I'm the right counsellor for you. There's no pressure or obligation, just the chance to have an initial conversation.

You can get in touch by phone, text or email, whichever feels easiest. When you're ready, I'll be here to listen.
